English maybe a simple language, yet it brings many benefits to everyday life. However, for many young people today (especially in Indonesia) English seems to be feared almost as much as mathematics. Some feel confused by it’s pronunciation, others struggle to understand the meaning of each word. As a result, many students are less interested in learning English and even try to avoid it, thinking: β€œWe live in Indonesia, not in England, so why bother learning it?” This kind of mindset is what holds back the younger generation from developing an interest in learning the language.

In reality, if we take a closer look, English has many practical uses and advantages. It’s useful in universities for studying, in the workplace for professional communication, and even in casual situations like chatting with or greeting foreign tourist who visit our area. Now, many universities require a TOEFL score as part of their graduation requirements. This helps not only the students but also the universities them selves in improving their accreditation, allowing them to gain international recognition.

For job seekers, having strong English skills can be a major advantage and even serve as a plus point during the hiring process.

From now on, let’s change our mindset because English is not something to be feared or avoided. Instead, it is a valuable skill that can bring many benefits to our lives. This idea doesn’t apply only in Indonesia, but all over the world many countries treat English as a second language to support communication beyond their native tongue.
